SLIM presented as an example of good practice in the Aminer Forum on ‘Promotion of R&D and innovation in Mining’
The mining sector of Andalusia (Spain) analyzes the possibilities of financing R&D and innovation through European Funds
Professionals of the mining-metallurgical industry and the Public Administration of the European región of Andalusia debated the present and future strategic role of innovation in a new edition of the Aminer Forum, which was held recently in Huelva, under the title ‘Promotion of R&D and innovation in mining”.
This event was organized by the Association of Companies Researchers, Extractors, Mining-Metallurgical Transformer, Auxiliary and Services, Aminer, with the support of companies Suez and ZABALA Innovation Consulting (member of the consortium of SLIM European project).
The Aminer Forum is a periodic initiative organized by the association that represents the main entities related to the metal mining in Andalusia with the objective of monitoring the evolution of mining, especially in its metal branch, and discuss the issues of greater actuality through the experience of the professionals related to this industry.
The session held was of special interest as it has been possible to analyze the opportunities for financing mining R&D and innovation through different European programmes.
After the initial presentation, a roundtable discussion was held focusing on ‘Innovation applied to mining’ and an exhibition on the future of R&D and innovation in mining, in which ZABALA Innovation Consulting has presented the paper “Beyond the Horizon2020. Opportunities for mining within the European R&D funding framework “. The SLIM project has been showed as an example of good practice, which also includes actions of social innovation, an important aspect for the sector an
d that makes the difference with respect to other projects. The event has also included exhibitions on mining projects in Andalusia and the challenges to be addressed by this European region.
With this new edition of the Aminer Forum, the Association of Companies Researchers, Extractors, Mining-Metallurgical, Auxiliary and Services Transformers wanted to highlight the need to establish innovation as a fundamental element of mining activity, which, on the other hand,, is already present in important projects of its partners, such as the Poly Metallurgical Refinery (PRM) of Cobre Las Cruces in Seville, among others.

Social innovation to minimize impact in mining areas
The European project SLIM – “Sustainable Low Impact Mining solution for exploitation of small mineral deposits based on advanced rock blasting and environmental technologies” lead by Technical University of Madrid is one of the most innovative in Raw Materials area
The European project SLIM “Sustainable Low Impact Mining solution for the exploitation of small mineral deposits based on advanced rock blasting and environmental technologies”, funded by the European Commission within the Horizon2020 Programme has recently been launched. This initiative involves thirteen European partners from Austria, Denmark, Sweden, France and Spain and will include the validation of technologies developed in mines located in Toledo and Granada (Spain) and in Eisenerz (Austria). SLIM will be developed over the next four years and has a global budget of 6,979,200 Euros.
